For Goa’s Missing forest cover, Say eyes afforestation at Madhya Pradesh

PANAJI: To compensate to the forest cover dropped in Goa through the years to various development jobs, the country has proposed to perform compensatory afforestation from Madhya Pradesh within a place of 300ha, mentioning it faces a lack of land.
Following hearing Goa’s proposal in a meeting on April 27, the national-level establishment Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) has asked the country to approach the Union environment ministry because of this shift in place for compensatory afforestation.
“Since Goa is a really small nation, there’s not any appropriate land available (for compensatory afforestation).
Already 1/3rd of this property is under forest cover, that can be along with the area consumed by water cells, etc..
Additionally, you cannot plant trees on places allowed for playgrounds, colleges and hospitals, and etc..
Land is needed for these facilities.
The environment ministry has enabled many countries to perform compensatory afforestation in different nations and we chose to request permission to perform the exact same to Goa,” principal chief conservator of forests to get Goa Subhash Chandra told TOI.
Goa now has a backlog of 1,600ha of compensatory afforestation to be completed.
According to Goa’s petition, Madhya Pradesh has created a supply to carry up 300ha of all afforestation through 2021-22.
Goa has suggested to move the capital necessary for the afforestation into Madhya Pradesh.
Goa will, nevertheless, must find a particular consent in the environment ministry.
In 2019, the ministry had shifted the standards to permit nations to carry up compensatory afforestation in a different nation.
But this kind of proposition is allowed for nations that have over 75 percent of its area under forest cover.
Goa doesn’t satisfy the standards as just around 60 percent of its area is under forest cover, according to the India State of Forest Report 2019.
However, this isn’t the very first time Goa has sought compensatory afforestation in a different nation.
This past calendar year, Karnataka consented to Goa’s petition and provided 800ha of property in Dharwad and Belagavi districts for afforestation, to compensate for its forest cover to become dropped in Goa to 3 infrastructural projects of street expansion, railroad doubling and higher pressure power line and substation.
To get 2021-22, Goa has put aside Rs 32.7 crore for compensatory afforestation.
