Colombo: Former Foreign Minister Sri Lanka Mangala Samaraweera died on Tuesday at a private hospital here because of Covid-19-related complications.
Samaraweera, 65, was contracted by a virus earlier this month and was treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from the Lanka Hospital.
Samaraweera, who was the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sri Lanka twice between 2005 and 2007 and from 2015-2017, was the highest rank of the two politicians Sri Lanka to surrender to Coronavirus after the death of the former Lokubandara WJM Lokubandara parliamentary speaker.
A support for liberal democracy politics, Samaraweera holds many senior cabinet positions since 1994, including the Ministry of Finance.
He came down from politics last year.
