Detroit: And Benishek, a surgeon who underwent three terms in Congress representing North Michigan, including the top peninsula, had died at the age of 69.
He died on Friday, according to a family statement, which did not offer further details about his death.
“We are broken hearted by losing suddenly a loyal friend, a loving husband, a dedicated grandfather and a tireless advocate for North Michigan,” his family said.
“As a doctor and surgeon, and save many lives in our community.
His work in Congress made a difference for veterans throughout the country and protecting Michigan’s natural wonders for years to come.” The Crystal Falls Republican, in Congress from 2011 to 2017 , served in the Agriculture Committee, Natural Resources and Veterans.
Benishek was born on the iron river in 1952 and worked in his family business, Iron River Hotel, until he was 18 years old.
He attended the University of Michigan and Wayne State University Medical School, according to his family.
He worked as a surgeon for two decades in the Iron Mountain VA medical center.
“And is a man who cares about the community, the state and country.
He is a cheerful advocate who struggles with the desire for common sense values,” the US Republic.
Bill Huizenga, a Holland Republic, wrote on Twitter.
“I’m proud to call him a friend and he will be very missed.” Grov.
Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, praised Benishek’s advocacy for veterans and his work to protect the bed dunes to sleep.
In a statement, he said the United States flag and Michigan would be lowered in his honor after the funeral arrangement was announced.
Benishek survived his wife, Judy, five children and five grandchildren.
