Four dog sniffers to help the cave police overcome medication

Panaji: Goa police have decided to get four fangs sniffers to overcome narcotics threats in the state.
At present, the police have 12 dogs conditioned to track, sniff narcotics and find explosives.
Goa police have written to the Intelligent Integrated Training Academy (IITA) in Telangana to check whether they have trained fangs, and when the next training is scheduled for dogs.
Speaking to TOI, anti-narcotics cell (ANC) Mahesh Gaonkar police supervisor said that they had received the approval of the department to add four sniffer dogs to Goa police dog troops.
He also said that two canines used to sniff narcotics.
“We have decided to get Labradors and train them,” said Gaonkar, added that one Labrador and German Shepherd were used for narcotics investigations.
Goa police will get additional fangs after a gap for more than two years.
In February 2019, six dogs – Romeo, Sandy, Dolly, Happy, Denny and Daisy have joined the police.
Gaonkar said that the department got a dog at the age of three and then they were sent for training for almost eight months.
He also said that the exchangers of these dogs were also sent for training along with the fangs of sniffers.
The clerk said that once the sniffer grew by joining the department, they would be taken to the train station, bus stands, and airports to sniff packages and cargo.
“If the canine teeth gives us a signal that something is suspicious, we open the parcel and cargo to verify the contents,” said the ANC head.
He also said that currently they take two fangs in all states to sniff narcotics.
In the first half of 2021, the Goa Police confiscated more than Rs 2 Crore Narcotics and confiscated nearly 100 kg of medicines.
Police arrested 55 people, including seven foreign nationals, because they had illegal narcotics.
Of the 55 narcotics attacks, 30 cases were ordered by North Goa police, which was the highest compared to the South Goa Police, ANC and Crime Branch.
