Mumbai: Seventeen children who suffer from spinal (SMA) muscular atrophy will get Spinraza (Nusinersen) which is expensive under a special program launched at BYL Nair Hospital on Wednesday as part of a hundred-year celebration.
High school is a life-threatening hereditary disease that causes weakness and a waste of muscles in children.
Nonprofits based in California, direct assistance, will provide new drugs Nusinersen under the Spinraza of the Patient’s Patient Access Humanitarian Program (Siphap).
“At present, a single dose of spinraza injection, 87 lakh Rs costs.
The total annual cost of therapy for one patient is almost Rs 6 Crore in the first year and RS 3.2 Crore in the following years.
After being chosen, the patient will receive this therapy for life for life,” said Drushma Malik, the head of the pediatrics.

This drug will be imported in August.
