New Delhi: In his offer to empower consumers to make decisions based on information before buying packaged items, the government will implement new packaging norms starting next April.
Manufacturers must make additional declarations to the MRP by mentioning commodity prices per unit – per kg or liters for items that weigh more than one kg or liter; and per gram or milliliter (ml) for items less than one kg or one liter.
There will be similar norms for items that can be measured in meters and centimeters.
Changed legal metrology rules (packaging commodities) also eliminate “certain quantities” norms for packaging for 19 types of goods including milk, tea, biscuits, vegetable oils, atta, soft drinks and drinking water, bread and cereal, bread and cereal, Bread and cereal, cement bags, and detergents.
So, there will be no specifications mandated by the government like that in the number and with this manufacturer will have the freedom to decide the number of all the items packed.
Another major changes are the mandatory declaration of “Moon and Year of Manufacturing” on imported package items instead of the current regime where the importers or sellers have the option mention every month and the date of import or pre-packaging.
“Any product quality is linked to the date of manufacture,” said an official of the consumer affairs ministry.
The ministry has notified changes in the rules.
