From Mine to Covid: Cambodian Dog Train To Sniff Viruses

Kampung Chhang: Cambodia Anti-Landmine Authority is a dog training for sniffing Covid-19, hoping that sharp nosed fangs are usually used to detect underground explosives can keep the virus on a tight rope.
Cambodia has won praise for a quick vaccine drive, with the Ministry of Health saying more than 98 percent of adult populations have received at least one dose.
Now they start a new strategy to see Covid cases.
Joining the fight will be 12 Malinois Belgian dogs The Cambodia Mine Action Center (CMAC) has been practicing to get out of patients who are not suspicious that might bring the virus.
In the long run, the center hopes to use dogs at large events, including a sports match, Director General Heng Ratana told AFP.
“Dogs are more efficient than other tools,” he said.
Health university science provides a sample of fluctuating organic compounds – organic chemicals that emit odors – from Covid-19 patients to demining body facilities in Kampong Chhnang Province.
The dogs, grew up in Cambodia, so far have been proven to be very good boys.
“After two and a half months, our dogs are in the early stages of success (so) they can sniff the scent of Covid-19,” said the dog coach Khom Sokly to AFP.
Four can now detect Covid-19 placed in a tube one meter in less than a minute, he said, while the other eight practices to eradicate the aroma in the open space “at any location”.
“In the future, I hope dogs can take part in preventing or reducing Covid-19 because they are fast,” Khom Sokly said.
The CMAC staff said the beginner virus hunters had several months left in their training regime.
Nearly three decades of US War and US bombings began in the 1960s leaving Cambodia one of the most bombed and mined countries in the world.
The kingdom has vowed to clean all mine and unscrupulous weapons in 2025, with several organizations working with veteran deminers, dogs sniffers and even mice achieved goals.
Other countries that deploy dogs in the war against Covid include Ecuador and Italy, where there are programs at Rome Hospital to instill training to detect viruses in human sweat.
Cambodia largely avoided mass outbreaks during last year’s pandemic, but cases jumped from a sign of 20,000 in May to a total of 110,000 cases at the end of September and more than 2,200 deaths.
