Melbourne: The size of the size of Mahatma Gandhi’s size, which is talented by the Indian government, has been damaged here in an act of Scott Morrison’s Prime Minister very condemned as “embarrassing”, triggering a surprise and disappointment between the Indian-Australia community.
The incident occurred several hours after Prime Minister Morrison launched the statue at the Australian Indian Community Center in Rowville on Friday with the Consul General of India Raj Kumar and other Australian leaders as part of Indian independence celebrations, Report Indian newspapers.
“It’s embarrassing and very disappointing to see this disrespectful level of sense,” Morrison said as quoted in the report on Sunday.
He said that attacks on cultural monuments will not be tolerated in a country which is the most successful multicultural and immigration country in the world.
“Anyone who is responsible for this has shown a sense of disrespect to the Australian Indian community and must be ashamed,” he said.
The statue was talented by the Indian government.
Police Victoria said a number of unknown violators used electric appliances to decapitate the statue at around 5:30 a.m.
on Friday and 17:30 on Saturday, according to ABC News.
Police said that the detective of the Knox Crime Crime Investigation Unit was investigating this issue and it was interesting for witnesses to advance with information.
The Indian community in the city expressed their surprise for the incident, filling it as “low action.” “The community is very surprised and sad.
I don’t (understand) why anyone will take a low vandalism,” Surya Prakash Soni, President of the Federation of Indian Associations in Victoria, was quoted as saying in the ABC report.
He said The Rowville Center was the center of the first Indian community in the state of Victoria and has been established after 30 years of efforts.
Australia India Community Charity Trust Chair Vasan Srinivasan said that he realized he was that someone tried to damage the statue within 24 hours after the opening.
“They tried to cut the head by grinding him,” he said as quoted by SBS News.
He said that nearly 300,000 Indians living in Victoria state and “I never expected this to happen in Victoria.” Srinivasan said that the police could not get fingerprints because of heavy rain throughout the day.
