New Delhi: Ganga cleaning is very important for the government because the Holy River has become the foundation of Indian economic activities, said Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Shekhawat, Monday.
The National Clean Ganga Mission has managed to connect ordinary people with the river, said Minister in Ganga Utsaav held here to celebrate the river.
“We have managed to connect Ganges with ordinary people and make it Jan Andolan under NMCG.
There are crores people who fulfill their responsibilities in carrying out the process of cleaning the ganga,” he said.
“Ganga has become the basis of Indian economic activities and 40 percent livelihoods of the country’s population depend on Ganga which also makes the most important cleaning for us,” he added.
Shekhawat said India was a diverse country and rivers such as ganga binding and uniting people so that our commitment to them is needed.
“Previously, the work for cleaning Ganga was being carried out in silos and efforts not carried out at the desired intensity,” he said.
Jal Shakti Secretary Pankaj Kumar said that because of NMCG, a significant increase in land that could be seen.
“We have started to see a significant increase in land with increased water quality whether it is in terms of dissolved oxygen or biological oxygen, or fecal coliform and this increase can be observed in many places,” he said.
He further said the government expanded the cleaning of the river and surpassed Ganga.
