Garba Controversy in Surat: ABVP Looking for Action Against Police

Letter: Demanding action against the police because of alleged struggling, around 200 members of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) including Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) and others held Dharna at the Varsity campus on Tuesday.
After a representation to K Chavda, Deputy Chancellor VNSGU, a member of the protest blocked the road outside the VNSgu campus and then went to file a memo to the district collector.
Then, members also held Dharna at the Umra police station.
Police Commissioner Ajay Tomar has ordered an investigation of the incident that will be carried out by the Deputy Commissioner of Police III who is responsible, K F Baloliya.
On the other hand, the police claimed that students held Garba where hundreds of students participated in the VNSGU Campus Flouling Clearing Guidelines who did not allow other Garba events unless Sheri Garba in the housing colony.
High-ranking officials at the university claimed that they were allowed to regulate Garba on campus for hostel students.
However, a large number of girls and boys from outside the campus were found in the venue.
“I let GARBA program be held on campus and the police must ask permission before entering the university campus.
Even reporters need permission to do anything on campus,” Chavda said.
However, VC could not explain who had called the police to campus and also why he failed to answer many calls from the police when they tried to contact him on Monday.
He claimed that the police could contact other university officers if he could not be reached.
The police went to campus around 19:30 a.m.
on Monday and when they asked students to maintain social distance, it led to confrontation with ABVP members.
“Students can arrange cultural events as part of their overall development even though Covid’s specific guidelines prohibit GARBA events except Jalan Garba,” Chavda added.
In written memorandum submitted to the minister’s chairman, ABVP leveled allegations against the police who stated that they were drunk and even tried to destroy students under their vehicles and also struggle the students at the police station.
Meanwhile, the ABVP video issued a threat to the police while standing in the police station Umra became a viral on social media where the police were warned that their vehicle tires would be leveled if they entered the university.
Following the pressure of MODI, PI, the UMRA police station, was seen apologizing to ABVP members.
“I started an investigation into this matter and an unbiased investigation would be done,” Baloliya told Toi.
