New Delhi: Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday clarified that the price of gasoline and diesel would not bring the tax regime (GST).
Media direction in the main decision taken at the 45th GST council meeting, Sitharaman said that GST board members explained that they did not want petroleum products to be included under GST.
“There is a lot of media speculation about whether petroleum products will be taken under the ambit GST.
I made it really clear that this came on today’s agenda because of the Kerala High Court order where he suggested the problem to be placed before GST.
Board,” said Sitharaman.
The panel has decided to report to Kerala HC that this problem is discussed and the council feels it’s not the time to bring petroleum products under GST, he added.
In June, the Kerala High Court, based on the writing petition, had asked the GST council to decide to bring gasoline and diesel in the Ambit GST.
Soaring the price of gasoline and diesel has become a cause of concern for consumers as a liter of gasoline costs more than Rs 100 in most cities.
Likewise, diesel prices are also close to the highest record.
The price of fuel has floated at the recording level due to a 41 increase in its retail level since April this year.
When GST was introduced in July 2017, five commodities – crude oil, natural gas, gasoline, diesel and turbine turbine (ATF) – kept away from PurView GST, given the dependence of income from the central and state governments on them.
