Chennai: The whole genome sequencing has confirmed the existence of the Omicron variant at least 33 Covid-19 patients in Tamil Nadu, Minister of Health MA Subramanian said on Thursday.
With this, 34 patients – passengers with international travel history and their close contact – found positively for variants.
“We have received confirmation that 33 people carry a new variant.
Previously, someone traveling from Nigeria through Doha was tested positive for Omicron,” Subramanian said.
In accordance with the ICMR protocol, all international passengers from ‘risky’ countries must undergo screening at the airport.
Those who tested negatively allowed the quarantine of Domiciliary and were ordered to repeat the eighth day.
Those who test positively will be sent to hospitals for isolation and their samples will be sent to the intact genome sequencing test to the laboratory in Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune.
At least 2% of passengers from other countries are tested.

Until 8am on Thursday, the state has tested 15,259 passengers, who have traveled from ‘risky’ countries, and 2,870 of 1,00,950 passengers traveling from other countries.
Of the 18,129 tests, 114 passengers – 45 on arrival, 48 on the eighth day and 21 families and close contact – have been tested positively.
The state sent all 114 samples to all genome sequence laboratories.
Among 114 Covid-19 patients, the decline in s-genes was noticed at 57.
On Thursday, the state received results for 60 samples.
Most (33) of them are positive omicron and 20 positive delta, he said.
Almost all 114 patients experienced a form of viral infection and 26 patients had been repatriated until Thursday night, he added.
During the meeting on Thursday, the State Ministry of Health again insisted on the need for testing on the arrival and quarantine of mandatory homes for international passengers.
