Berlin: Germany has stopped development assistance for Afghanistan for now, the minister is responsible on Tuesday, after the Taliban swept back to power.
“State cooperation regarding the development is suspended for now,” said Minister of Development Gerd Mueller in an interview with the Rheinische newspaper.
“We work at speeds to flee from Afghanistan regional development officials and NGO workers who want to go.” A difficult situation in the ground has created obstacles to the evacuation mission led by German forces in Kabul.
Officials admitted on Tuesday that a German military plane left Kabul only brought seven evakares when hundreds of waiting on the ground because the allies responsible for security at the airport could not secure their access to transportation.
Germany tried to resolve the evacuation of local staff “as far as possible” in the scope of the current evacuation mission, Mueller told the newspaper.
“We also see other ways outside it,” he added.
The German government has agreed to send 430 million euros ($ 506 million) to Afghanistan a year, making it one of the biggest donors for the country.
This money is intended to support the training of local police forces and strengthen the justice system, and advance women’s rights and fight corruption.
Speaking last week, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said the country was not “feasible” without the support of international assistance.
“We will not send other cents to this country if the Taliban take full control, introduce Sharia law and turn it into a caliphate,” said Maa.
