Giant squirrels, wild cats on display at Pune Zoo

Pune: Civic-Run Zoo in Pune will soon have two new attractions for visitors – Indian giant squirrels and wild cats – officials say on Tuesday.
Their enclosure will be inaugurated on Wednesday, but because the zoo is currently closed because Covid-19, people have to wait to see a glimpse of this wildlife species.
The giant squirrel, also called Shekru, is a country animal from Maharashtra and is usually found in its original habitat specifically in the Bhimashankar Junnar region in Pune District.
A pair of giant squirrels will be on display at the Gandhi Gandhi Zoology Park and the wildlife research center, known as the Katraj Zoo which is managed by Pune Muncipal Corporation (PMC), an official said.
According to the official, the zoo authority has saved the female shekaru and save it with a male giant squirrel as part of a breeding program.
Their population now increases to seven.
“From these seven, older male and female squirrels will be saved to be served for citizens,” said Kunal Khemnar, an additional Municipal commissioner.
