CALANGUTE: A big fire in early morning destroyed 14 shops on Jalan Holiday Calangute in Gauravaddo.
A tea shop operating from a home side side by side partially broken and a car parked in that place was silent.
However, there were no reported injuries.
The fire broke around 3am while the new year celebration occurred in the tourist hub.
Officials from Pilerne Fire Station said they reached the place in 10 minutes after they received a call at 3.30 in the morning.
They joined the fire tender from Mapapa.
The fire was watered at 6 am.
Tea shop owner, Sajjan Morya, said they had closed the shops around 2am and went to bed in the rooms next to the shops.
He said he was awakened by a loud voice from the fire bent sheet metal from the shop wall.
“When I came out, I saw a few shops on fire.
When I woke up someone else, the fire had spread to all the shops,” he said, adding, “some shop owners had food at that time in their room near.” The shops sell it.
Clothing, coastal wear, imitation bags and jewelry.
Morya said all shop owners came from Nepal and had brought a large number of fresh stocks for the top tourist season.
API officials said the quantum loss was not confirmed.
Morya said the loss tended to around Rs 35 Lakh.
The shop owner will submit their loss statement on Monday.
Said that the cause of the fire was unknown, an API official said, “We will be able to declare the cause of the fire only after we get a report from the electricity and police departments who also investigate this problem.” Fighters are led by Rupesh Sawant and with Pednekar.
Shops were established on Esmelda Gomes property.
