Goa: Erosion of the hillside intensifies landslides

Keri: The instability of the hillside due to erosion and the rainwater movement that suddenly contains debris is one of the causes of a massive landslide recently in Satre in Sattari Taluka, experts said.
Landslides occurred at Wildlife Sanctuary Mhadei, to the left of Chandsurya Ghat, left Satre to Parwad.
Landslides start from the top of the hill and parts of loose materials, along with large stones and gravel moves, forming channels.
Although the area where landslides took place far from human settlement, the opening of the forest was carried out in the past to trim and burn agriculture in Satre and in Chikhale and Parwad Karnataka had intensified landslide instances.
A permanang who visited this area recently, Vitthal Shelke, told Toi, “Because of heavy rain, large stones lying on the hillside have undergone chemical weathering, so that accounting for the soil movement of porridge and loose stone down the slopes.” The Shetye Kerenan Resident said that because of landslides, Super, along with rainwater, moved to Kalasa Nullah, which eventually emptied on the Mhadei River in the USTE.
Apart from this, there is also very large ecological damage.
“Landslides have been responsible for revoking a large number of trees and vegetation, causing environmental losses,” Vithoba Gawde said.
Nandkumar Kamat, a scientist related to the Country Biodiversity Board of Goa said, “Full air supervision and mapping using drones and truthing land by teams with officials from the Ministry of Forestry and the Department of Water Resources (WRD), using local stakeholder assistance must be done.
“He said there was also a need for mapping full of mudflow.
“The forestry department must carry out contours, the stabilization steps of the slopes and tree plantations to stabilize the slope of the eroded hills while WRD must build a temporary dam and sediment traps to stop the flow of mud into the main river channel.” Furthermore, he said that officials must also investigate the problem on the Karnataka side, above Satrem Village, to ensure the extent to which deforestation, soil erosion, and sediment flow in the flow.
