PANAJI: The Goa section experienced continuous rainfall on Thursday, encouraging the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) to issue a red warning.
However, compared to eight-hour melting rain near the coastal area until 5:30 a.m.
on July 18 – which is a day of seashayed this season, so far – the amount of rainfall experienced on Thursday is lower.
For example, while the Panaji Rain Measuring Station recorded 8cm rainfall at 4pm on July 18, only 5cm recorded in the same duration on Thursday.
ELA, Old Goa Station has recorded 15cm rainfall in 12 hours (8.30am to 8:30) on July 18, but the IMD scientists said that at the station it might not accept the same amount of rainfall on Thursday.
At 5:30 p.m., Ela, the old Goa station has recorded rain only 7cm.
These numbers, however, are only based on several automated weather stations in several parts of the country.
There are other areas – especially those close to Ghats – which experienced intense rainfall activities on Thursday.
“Even if rainfall in some areas may not pass 20cm, the impact will be higher than the previous days because it has been raining for days.
Because of such a situation, we issued a red warning for July 22,” said IMD scientist Rahul M, said.
The highest rainfall on Thursday was reported from Valpoi (7cm).
So far, the state has received 201cm of average cumulative rainfall on normal value of 165cm, 22% higher.
Last year, rainfall was 26% higher than the normal value on July 22.
