Panaji: Vaccination against Covid-19 for pregnant women will begin on Friday even when the second wave of pandemic has claimed the life of six pregnant women in the state so far, including one of Sindhudurg, Maharashtra.
Medical staff training at the national level, state and peripherals have been completed and cares for the Ministry of Health and family welfare for vaccination programs has been divided by all stakeholders, state immunization officers, Dr.
Rajendra Borp to reporters.
Borkar, who has charges on the health welfare and family of the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), said that of the six pregnant women who had given up on the virus during the second wave of pandemic, three had gestational diabetes, two had hypertension and someone suffered from kidney disease.
There were no pregnant women who died because of the virus during the first wave, he said.
Only last week, the Recomitable Expert Committee consisting of a doctor to help the government prepare for the third wave of pandemic – has suggested that pregnant women be given the choice to vaccinate against Covid-19 after they are advised.
The members say there is no teratogenicity evidence (the ability to cause defects in the fetus) in women who have taken vaccines while do not realize that they are pregnant.
Goa looks at an average of 18,000-20,000 delivery every year.
Borkar appeals to all pregnant women to take advantage of the opportunity to be investigated against Covid-19.
He also advised them to leave early to avoid the crowd, and to make sure they eat well and hydrated adequately.
Drinking water is provided in all vaccination centers, he said.
“Research has found that the benefits are greater than the risks involved.
Vaccination, per se, will not prevent infection.
They can still contract covid but the consequences of this disease will be worse on those who are not vaccinated,” he said.
