CALANGUTE: Seven people were arrested after the Calangute police on Thursday destroyed the fake call center which was allegedly used to deceive US citizens.
The police said they received reliable information about the call center, operated from a hotel in Gauravaddo, Calangute, followed which they invaded and arrested seven, which came from various parts of India.
This is not the first time Goa police have solved illegal call centers operating with specific purposes to deceive US citizens.
On September 9, TOI reported that police arrested 13 people operating a fake call center from a hotel in Morjim, who also deceived US citizens.
The police said that in the Calalangute case, the modus operandi the person was to get the personal details of the US citizens by using VPN (Virtual Private Networks).
They will then contact US citizens through an interactive voice response system by imitating US law enforcers and social service social officials.
They will tell them that they have taken illegal actions such as fraud, drug accessures, etc., and ask them to solve problems by paying them online using various modes such as gift cards, target cards, Google salary, and cryptocurrency.
The defendant will then withdraw money at the Indian Rupee in Ahmedabad.
Seven was identified as Mausam Kumar, 31, Jay Rupael, 26, both of Gujarat, Jacky Senani, 23, from Thane, Arindam Lagachu, 19, from Arunachal Pradesh, Milon Hussain, 23, from Meghalaya, Techina Merak, 22, from Meghalaya and Sweta Raikwar, 19, from New Delhi.
The police have attached 30 laptops, including laptop servers, 25 laptop chargers, 24 headphones, two router with adapters, and cellphones, all worth RS 20 lakh, which is used to operate a fake call center.
The Calangute police registered a violation below Section 419, 420, 384 read with 34 IPCs, and parts 66-C, 66-D from the IT Law.
