PANAJI: Rare fungal species, recently found in Bandora, Goa, has been identified as a new species for science and is in the process of being named.
Mushroom species are being documented as part of efforts by the Country Biodiversity Council (GSBB) and Microbiologist Dr.
Nandakumar Kamat to identify various types of fungi in Goa.
“We have found many interesting new species but because our pandemics cannot learn it in the laboratory.
But we have enough information and it is a surprising finding that comes out of the micro-level intensive drive,” said Dr.
Kamat.
The Chairperson of the Bandora Bandora Diversity Committee Add Email Tilve said that they had identified 118 different types of fungal in the 12-year-old jurisdiction were rare species and three have been recorded for the first time in Goa and one has been recorded for the first time in India.
“But the other is a completely new species for science.
At present, we are in the process of validating this species,” Tilve said.
Bandora-Resident and a radiologist at GMC Devesh rose was the first to stumble on the species and photographed it to prove his findings.
Searches are made by GSBB involving locals who have forest knowledge and scientists who are experts in the field.
The geographical location of the new findings is marked so that the researchers can review the space next year to study.
“This is an example for all countries how the biodiversity council must work with trained microbiologists and local communities to explore biological wealth.
In this way, India will excel in research.
We need anti-viruses, new anti-cancer drugs, industrial chemicals and antibiotics, “Kamat said.
There are two stages of claiming new species – tentative identification where species are not mentioned and laboratory studies with species descriptions and publications.
“Instructions that need to be followed by the identification process have been followed by people.
When we claim that certain species are new, we must conduct intensive studies of species in the laboratory and publications will be possible next year,” Kamat said.
He also called on this rare fungal conservation by urging the local community to preserve species instead of eating it.
