PANAJI: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) started construction of their 2nd innovative guided-missile frigate for the Indian Navy on Friday.
The keel for the frigate has been set by vice-chief of naval personnel, vice-admiral G Ashok Kumar.
GSL intends to send the very first warship at 2026 and the next six months following the first.
The boat under construction a part of their native shipbuilding programme being implemented under a tech transfer programmw using Russia’s Yantar Shipyard.
In 2018, India and Russia signed a bundle of shipbuilding contracts involving four Job 11356 frigates, together with two boats being constructed by Yantar Shipyard and 2 being assembled by GSL predicated on technologies headed by Russia.
“There are significant changes in the plan of these boats to be assembled at GSL as important native content has been fitted on these boats,” said Kumar while talking on the event.
The hulls of both boats are being constructed with steel.
The ministry of defence and GSL left the contract to the 2 boats in January 2019.
“Keel-laying is a significant landmark activity in the building of the boat, symbolising proper commencement of the building process,” explained GSL chairman and MD, B Nagpal.
“It’s for first time these vessels of these enormous complexity happen to be assembled everywhere,” Kumar explained.
