PANAJI: In an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of the state country, the government has decided to provide subsidies for 11,000 electric vehicles every year for a period of five years.
Subsidies will be limited to Rs 25 Crore every year.
In accordance with the draft scheme for the promotion of electric vehicles in the state, every year for the next five years, subsidies will be given to 10,000 two-wheels not exceeding Rs 10 Crore per year, 500 tricycles do not exceed Rs 1 and around 500 wheel vehicles do not exceed Rs 14 Crore.
Subsidies will be given on the basis of the first service coming, a senior official said.
Subsidies will be disbursed in one installment that is 100% for the purchase of vehicles and production of purchase documents – RC and insurance books.
Goa has a vehicle density from 625 vehicles for every 100 people and is ranked fifth in the world in terms of vehicle density.
“Adopting the use of electric vehicles for daily trips is needed to achieve various purposes, including improving air quality, reducing noise levels and reducing generation of greenhouse gas emissions,” officials said.
This scheme also aims to achieve the target set by the center, under the Mobility of Electric National (NEMPP), to have six to seven million electric vehicles and hybrids on Indian streets in 2020, officials said.
With the price of electric vehicles around 50% higher than conventional internal combustion vehicles, the target has not been achieved.
“For this purpose, the new and renewable energy department has strict a memorandum of understanding with energy convergence services Ltd., which is a subsidiary which is fully owned by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd., under the administration of the Ministers’ Union,” The official said.
The adoption scheme and manufacturing of hybrid and electricity vehicles that are faster are launched by the center to save 120 million barrels of oil and four million tons of carbon dioxide and reduce vehicle emissions by 1.3% by 2020.
