New Delhi: Google on Monday dedicated Doodle to Indian cellologist Dr.
Kamal Ranadive on his 104th birthday.
It has been illustrated by guest artists based in India Ibrahim Rayintakath.
Ranadive is famous for its innovative cancer research and devotion to create a more just society through science and education.
Kamal Samarath, better known as Kamal Ranadive, was born today in 1917 in Pune.
His father’s encouragement to pursue Medical Education inspired by Ranadive to Excel academically, but he found him calling biology.
In 1949, he received a doctorate in cytology, cell studies, while working as researchers at the Indian Cancer Research Center (ICRC).
After a scholarship at the University of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, he returned to Mumbai (then Bombay) and ICRC, where he founded the country’s first network culture laboratory.
As an ICRC and pioneering director in the modeling of cancer development animals, Ranadive is one of the first researchers in India to propose the relationship between breast cancer and offspring and to identify relationships between cancer and certain viruses.
Continuing this trailblazing work, Ranadive studied mycobacterium leprae, bacteria that caused leprosy, and assisted in developing vaccines.
In 1973, Dr.
Ranadive and 11 colleagues founded the Association of Indian Women’s Scientists (IWSA) to support women in the scientific field.
Ranadive truly encourages Indian students and scholars abroad to return to India and put their knowledge to work for their community.
After retiring in 1989, Dr.
Ranadive works in rural communities in Maharashtra, trains women as health workers and provides health and nutritional education.
IWSA now has 11 chapters in India and provides scholarships and childcare choices for women in science.
Dedication of Dr.
Ranadive on justice and health education still affects his students who work as current scientists.
