New York: Google Employees based in the same office before Pandemics can see different changes in payments if they switch to work from home permanently, with long commuters being hit harder, according to the company paying a calculator seen by Reuters.
This is an experiment that occurs in Silicon Valley, which often sets trends for other major employers.
Facebook and Twitter also cut paid for remote employees who move to cheaper areas, while small companies including Reddit and Zillow have shifted to the model-agnostic salary model, citing profits when it comes to hiring, retention and diversity.
Google Alphabet Inc.
stands out in offering employee calculators that allow them to see the effects of a step.
But in practice, some remote employees, especially those traveling remotely, can experience salary cuts without changing their addresses.
“Our compensation package is always determined by the location, and we always pay at the top of the local market based on where an employee works from,” Google spokesman said, added that payments would be different from the city to the city and the country.
One Google employee, who asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation, usually walked to the Seattle office from the nearest area and the possibility of seeing their payment pieces around 10% by working from a full-time house, according to estimates of the Location Equipment employees were launched in June.
The employee considers long distance work but decides to continue going to the office – although two hours drive.
“It’s as high as paid cuts as I get for my latest promotion.
I don’t do all the hard work to be promoted then taking payment pieces,” they said.
Jake Rosenfeld, a Professor of Sociology in Washington University in St.
Louis, who researched the determination, the word Google’s salary structure increases the alarm about who will feel the most acute impact, including the family.
“What is clear is that Google doesn’t have to do this,” Rosenfeld said.
“Google has paid these workers at 100% of the previous wages, by definition.
So it’s not like they can’t afford their workers who choose to work with what they receive.” The screenshot of Google’s internal salary calculator was seen by Reuters showing that an employee who lives in Stamford, Connecticut – one hour from New York City by train – will be paid 15% less if he works from home, while a colleague from the same office lives in New York City will not see pieces from working from home.
Screenshot shows a difference of 5% and 10% in the Seattle, Boston and San Francisco regions.
Interview with Google employees showed a deduction of a 25% high payment for long distance work if they left San Francisco for an almost expensive area in the state such as Lake Tahoe.
The calculator stated that he used the Metropolitan Statistics Area of the US Census Bureau, or CBSA.
Stamford, Connecticut, for example, not in the CBSA New York City, although many people who live there work in New York.
A Google spokesman said the company would not change the salaries of employees based on their work offices to be completely remote in the city where the office was located.
Employees who work at the New York City office will be paid the same as those who work remotely from other New York city locations, for example, according to a spokesman.
Google does not specifically address this problem for commuter from the area such as Stamford, Connecticut.
