New Delhi: Google on Sunday celebrated the country’s first country doctor with special doodles on his 160-birth birthday.
The Goodle homepage displays a portrait of ganguly with a picture of the main building of Kolkata Medical College and a hospital in the background.
This has been designed by Bengaluru Oddrija-based artist.
Along with Anandi Joshi, Ganguly was the first woman in Colonial India to study medicine and got a title in 1886.
While Joshi studied at Womans Medical College of Pennsylvania in the US, Ganguly was chasing Western medicine at Calcutta Medical College (CMC).
Born in the Brahmo family on July 18, 1861, Ganguly, along with Chandramukhi Basu, became the first woman graduate in India, from Bethune College in Kolkata.
After his marriage to Reformer Brahmo Dwarkanath Ganguly, the couple fought the prohibition of CMCS in women studying there, and Kadambini joined medical colleges on June 23, 1883 despite the strong criticism of the colonial society.
He was awarded a medical college graduate from the Bengal (GMCB) degree in 1886, which even attracted the attention of Florence Nightingale who asked about Ganguly from a friend in a letter in 1888.
Ganguly then studied in England.
The women’s rights champions, Ganguly are among the six members of the first All-Women delegation from the Indian National Congress 1889.
After the death of her husband in 1898, she practiced treatment in Kolkata until his death in 1923.
