New Delhi: Road Transportation and Minister of Jalan Raya Nitin Gadkari on Friday said his service has formalized the registration process of vintage motorized vehicles in India, to promote and preserve the inheritance of the vehicle.
The center in November last year said it intends to formalize the vintage motorized vehicle registration process, and has been looking for public comments for the proposed rules regarding this matter.
“With the aim of preserving and promoting Vintage Vehicle Heritage, Mort has formalized the registration process for vintage motor vehicles in India,” Gadkari said in a series of tweets.
Without the existing rules to regulate the registration process in various countries, it says the new rules must provide a bother-free process along with prominent features such as old number retention for registered vehicles and the ‘VA’ series (unique registration ‘mark) for registration new.
The Ministry of Transportation and Highway (Morus) has invited public comments for the proposed rules on registering vintage vehicles.
“The Ministry of Transport and Highway has issued a GSR 734 (E) on November 25, 2020, looking for comments and suggestions in connection with the Amendment of CMVR, 1989, which is related to Vintage motorized vehicles,” he said.
CMVR stands for central motorized vehicle rules.
The draft rules define Vintage motorized vehicles as all vehicles that are two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles (non-commercial and personal use) and more than 50 years from their first registration date (including imported vehicles).
There are limitations in definitions – no substantial reshuffle of vehicles that include modifications in the chassis or body shell, and / or machines.
Vintage motorized vehicles are allowed to run on Indian streets only for display, technical research or participate in vintage car rallies, refueling and maintenance, exhibitions, vintage demonstrations, and everywhere for the exhibition or car rally.
The government said the aim was to preserve and promote the heritage of old vehicles in India.
