Government in HC: Talking about UCC after legal panel file reports

New Delhi: The center on Friday told the Delhi High Court will consult with stakeholders about the problem of formulating uniform civil code after receiving a legal commission report on this issue.
In May 2019, the court has been seeking a central response to Ashwini Upadhyay’s lawyer petition which seeks the constitution of the Judicial Commission to compile UCC to promote national integration, and equality.
The Center told the court that this issue was important and needed in-depth study of various private laws.
Also said the petition could not be maintained because the formulation of the UCC was “policy issues” that must be decided by “selected representatives of people” and “there is no direction that can be released in this matter”.
In addition to upadhyay’s request, there are four others who argue that India “desperately needs a uniform civil code”.
