New Delhi: Taliban fighters have brought Salima Mazari, one of the three Afghan female governors, in their custody, according to local reports.
Mazari is the Governor of the Hazara District Chaharint, Balkh.
Mazari, known for raising his voice against the Taliban, said that before there would be no place for women if the rebels took control of the country.
“In the province controlled by the Taliban, there are no women who are there again, even in cities.
They are all imprisoned in their homes,” he said in an interview from Mazar-e-Sharif, before falling to the Taliban.
Afghanistan Crisis: Live updatesmazari is a member of the Hazara community – mostly Shia Muslims, the Sunni Taliban considers a heretic sect.
They have been regularly targeted by the Taliban and Islamic State fighters, including attacks at school in the capital in May which killed more than 80 girls.
Before the takeover of the Taliban Afghanistan, Mazari has recruited local residents to add conventional security forces in the district to fight militants.
