Bhubaneswar: The state government has approved the Rs 60 Crore for a new scheme to build the check-cum-weir of the bridge and culverts built in various rivers to store adequate water during the monsoon.
The rural development work and department will build around 100 check-cum-weirs in all states, especially on small bridges that rely on the foundation of the raft.
“Odisha mainly depends on monsoons for various activities such as irrigation, drinking water, aquaculture and groundwater.
Without facilities for storage in the reservoir, the large volume of water from the river flows into Bengal Bay.
This structure will help to store water to use during the non-period period Monsun, “said a senior government official, confirmed approval for the scheme.
It states that most rivers in the country are seasonal except some eternal, the official said the lack of adequate storage resulted in scarcity of serious water for drinking and agricultural activities during the summer.
“The purpose of this scheme is to store the amount of adequate water during the monsoon in the stream and the river for various purposes.
Storage will also help refill ground water that will help in increasing green cover and cultivation of rabbi plants,” the official said, added that It is a low-cost scheme with high impact.
While the provisions for the scheme have been made in the recent additional budget for 2021-22, the Department of Work and Rural Development has been asked to prepare guidelines for its implementation.
Both departments have been asked to submit proposed locations and draw check-cum-weirs to water resources departments for more technical consultations.
