Letter: Going for a detailed investigation, the Gujarat pollution control agency (GPCB) has collected 50 samples from different industrial units in the GIDC Sachin area for analysis of chemicals that cause gas formation around it.
The formation of toxic gas during the disposal of illegal chemicals from a tanker in the runnel open on January 6 caused six deaths while 23 fell ill and had to be hospitalized.
GPCB will enter for a sophisticated gas chromatography test – mass spectrometry (GCMS) to identify substances that lead to tragic incidents, officials said.
Police investigations have revealed that chemicals released from tankers and waste are present in a creek cause deadly gas formation.
“We made an effort to know exactly how the gas formation took place.
We will identify what kind of chemicals are in Tannnel and find out from the industry where they are released,” said an GPCB official.
“GPCB has collected at least 50 samples in three days of the industry at GIDC Sachin.
It takes a few days for the GCMS test report to arrive.
Only after the report appears then we will be able to set if the chemicals in the runnel are released from whatever industry at the GIDC Sachin or not, “Officially added.
Although the GCM report is awaited, the GPCB source said that the initial findings showed that chemicals on tankers and chemicals in the runnel had come from outside the GIDC Sachin.
