Coimbatore: Coimbatore Forest Development Agency and the Nilgiris Forest Development Agency have involved scientists from The Forest College and Research Institute in Mettupalayam to find ways to increase the availability of animal feed for elephants and other herbivores by planting the original fodder grass on Western Western slopes.
Division Officer Coimbatore D Venkatesh said that research, ‘identification of native animal feed grass and developing mass doubts’ techniques, aims to prevent human elephant conflicts.
Scientists aim to document the native fodder grass and animal feed trees in the coimbatore division.
They will also assess the nutritional value of grass and trees, and record mass multiplication technology to the plant.
Like 29 species of animal feed grass, including summer grass, broom grass and grass signal documented in the sirumugai forest.
Grass slip is collected and grew up in nurseries for mass multiplication studies.
A total of 14 original fodder species are documented.
Spiny bamboo giant seeds (Bambusa Bambos) and Sacred Fig (Ficus Religiosa) were collected and sprinkled in the Binata Hardwickia nursery room) and Mahuwa (Madhuca Latifolia) was planted in the Mother of the Park as a bank fodder and also for mass doubts.
Teaf samples and plant parts of 29 grass species and 14 dried species and powders to characterize nutrition and nutritional value.
Work is ongoing.
