Chennai: To improve ground water table and prevent flooding, City Corporation has proposed to establish ‘Park Sponge’ with an artificial pool and rain garden at the Flood Flood Flood Water Pump Station in the Manali Zone.
The project, under an integrated Stormwater project in Kosasthalaioar Basin, will replicate Tanner Park in Portland, USA, where run-off drain water storm is stored in the pool.
Greater Chennai Corporation requested a consultant based in the Netherlands Royal HaskoningDHV to prepare detailed project reports.
A senior corporate official said, “Instead only set tanks and other concrete infrastructure, such technology to increase ground water can be used.” Previous proposal for concrete tanks to collect water from storm waterways and pumping solutions flowing into buckingham canal caused by high costs.
The current proposal, said an official, is for urban space with a permanent pool which can be a garden during the dry months along with rain gardens, wetlands and storage ponds using eco water blocks.
The pool will be an infiltration tank that has several layers to filter water and keep water runoff.
“It will have a gravel compartment, soil filter, and blocks to help a large amount of absorbing water to the ground in a short time.
The moes and walls will also be arranged.” The rain park is a shallow depression with original plants and grass, strategically located to capture runoff from the surface Hard like an entrance, parking area, sidewalk or road.
After water gathers in the rain garden, infiltration can take up to 48 hours after large rainfall.
Such a garden combines genuine vegetation and does not needed fertilizer.
After the first year, maintenance is usually minimal.
A corporate official told TII, “Simply, it is a man-made wetland that will replicate all the features of the natural pool system and green ecosystem,” he said.
A similar concept that was linked to the tissue of the storm water channel was previously implemented in the tank of the Vadadaani temple and reduced stagnation of water on the road, said R R Sivaraman, a rainy harvest.
