Athens: A painting donated to Greece by Pablo Picasso will be exhibited in the newly renovated national gallery in Athens after recovery of more than nine years after being stolen and the arrest of a 49-year-old construction worker as a suspect.
Authorities said on Tuesday that “Head of Women ‘Picasso and a work by the Dutch Master of Piet Mondrian,” Symer Mill with Summer House’ was stolen in January 2012 from the National Gallery in Athens.
They recovered, wrapped in plastic sheets and were hidden on a dry river bed outside Athens after the suspect was detained because he was questioned.
Picasso’s work from a woman in the style of cabbage was donated to Greece in 1949 with dedication “in honor of the Greeks’ for their resistance to the work led by Germany in World War II.” This painting is very important and emotional value when the great painter personally dedicates it to the Greeks for their struggle against fascist and Nazi forces (occupying) and bearing the handwriting dedication, “said Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni.” That is why this painting is not possible.
” Not only sells but even to display because it will soon be identified as stolen from the National Gallery.
“The National Gallery recently reopened after a large renovation that lasted nine years and it was delayed for months because of a pandemic.
Mendoni doesn’t say when the restored job will be displayed again.
The suspect was a Greek man who was believed to have acted alone, police said.
They are investigating their claims that the third stolen job, the image of the religious scene by the 16th century painter Italia Gugcia Caccia, was damaged and discarded shortly after the 2012 break.
The police did not provide details about how the suspect and painting were located, but noted that they had been moved to dry.
The river bed recently, apparently took part in a report on the Greek news media that the authorities were close to the arrest.
