Gandhinagar: Gujarat government will store enough water in 56 state reservoirs to supply drinking water requirements until September 30.
The government announced on Tuesday that the remaining water of the dam was being transferred to irrigate plants to stand even when the state looked at the prospect of the less monsoon this year.
The official of the Department of Water Resources said on Tuesday in a statement that 9.5 lakh hectares of land received irrigation water because the state government adopted drastic steps to save farmer plants.
Of the 56 dams where water is stored for drinking purposes, 36 is in Saurashtra, while the rest are in other areas in the state, a government statement said.
In the north Gujarat, Dharoi Dam will provide drinking water and water to irrigate more than 37,000 hectares of land in North Gujarat Regency.
In the center of Gujarat, more than 5 lakh hectares of land will be irrigated with water from Kadana and other small dams such as Panam, Karad, Wadhwana, Wrap, Meshwo, Hathmati, Karjan, Sukhi, Dev, Patadungari, and Edalwana.
Gujarat has experienced a shortage of monsoon rain and overall, the dams filled into less than half of their capacity in the state.
The source said the level on the dam would further drain with the decision to divert water for irrigation.
