Ahmedabad: The first 26 days of August this year has recorded a total of 54mm average rainfall in Gujarat, accounting of only 15% of seasonal rain.
In comparison, 2020 and 2019 each reported 543mm and 400mm rainfall.
In fact, the GSDMA data revealed that it was the weakest rainy season in the last five years for the country.
Overall, the state is more than 50% lack of seasonal rainfall.
Forecast of the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) has indicated that there is a slim chance of good rainfall until the end of the month.
Even in South Gujarat, which generally recorded good rainfall, all the districts less this year.
Five districts – Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Aravalli, Surendranagar and Bansaskantha – have a 60% or more rain deficit.
IMD statistics revealed that Saurashtra and Kutch had a 50% rain deficit of the long-term average until August 26, while the figure was 46% for other countries.
CM State Deputy Nitin Patel at Ahmedabad said that after years, the state had experienced less monsoons.
“The majority of the districts have received far less than their average rainfall at this time.
The 300-odd dam which is intended for irrigation purposes has very little water at this time,” he said.
But Patel assured that Narmada Dam would provide adequate water to drink.
“Sarovar Sardar Dam has far fewer water this year compared to the previous year.
But as Minister Narmada, I can certainly say that the amount of water in the Narmada Dam is enough to provide drinking water over the following year for more than four crore people Gujarat,” he said.
Commenting on the water transferred from the dam for irrigation purposes, Patel said that after ordering water for drinking purposes, all additional water is being given for plants.
“The state government has provided water for irrigation from the dam connected to the Narmada canal network,” said Patel.
