Ahmedabad: Gujarat 1,600 km coastline seems to have turned out to be a grace for international drug mafia and between countries that use it to slip narcotics into the country.
This year alone, the Gujarat police have confiscated drugs worth 1,617 crore – the highest in the history of the country.
According to official records, seizures 67.304kg drugs and psychotropic substances so far have at least 800 times more than last year’s seizure of 12.458kg worth RS 195 Crore.
These year drug spasms include marijuana, opium, charas, heroin and synthetic drugs such as metamfetamine and mephedrone.
Haul is released from the seizure of the largest narcotics substances in the country – a consignment of 3,000 kg of heroin at the Port of Mundra in Kutch District – by the Directorate of Intelligence Income (DRI) in September this year.
Gujarat DGP Ashish Bhatia said the state police made seizures because of increasing alertness.
A senior police officer said Gujarat had witnessed the seizure of all kinds of drugs for two reasons.
“First, Gujarat Beach has always been a traditional transition route for drug landing.
Then, the consignment is usually transported to Punjab.
However, now we also see trends where drugs are intended for consumption in Gujarat and state such as Maharashtra,” he said.
The officer added, “Second, the Taliban took power in Afghanistan has caused an increase in the flow of drugs when the Mafia drug wants to empty their shares on the Talibani regime.” After the Taliban came to power in August, we saw Mundra’s medicine seizures, two medium operations where 35kg and 77kg Heroin was confiscated, followed by 146kg heroin seizures from Morbi Village and other parts of the coast of Saurashtra.
In all cases, drugs come from Afghanistan.
