Gujarat: Women here move from home to home to record electricity meter readings

Vadodara: Women at Dahod Taluka from Tribal District Struts who communicate from home to home and even travel with public transport to record electrical meter readings and make bills.
And it’s not an initiative that will fade as they have done for three years now.
The decision to bind a woman to read the meter is taken as part of the initiative to give them jobs.
Women from Mandal Sakhi in the district have associated with the assignment.
Motherha Bhabhor from Rozam Village in Taluka has been with a project since the early days.
“Initially it was difficult to bind to the woman for the job.
But seeing others doing successfully, several other people joined,” he said.
The women have taken the reading of the meter of around 2,500 connections on Taluka.
Meters spread around five different villages.
They paid Rs 6.88 per meter reading.
“Payments on the basis of the number of readings they take.
A woman can get around Rs 10,000 per month under the project,” said Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Ltd.
Escurence Engineer Pankaj Thanawala.
Varsha Rathod from Bhavka Village said that a woman can easily visit 70 to 80 houses per day in a populated village.
“Where the house is in a distant location, we can discuss about 55 houses a day.
This work also provides flexibility and other women from the group can be given a job if one of us cannot come for several reasons,” Rathod said.
Livelihood manager Dahod Taluka Anjana Muniya said that the memorandum of understanding was signed with electricity companies for the work.
“Educated women between grade 10 and class 12 are eligible for work,” he said.
The work was taken in other talucas in Dahod District too, but not too successful.
