Rajkot: The first case of Gujarat from the Omicron Covid-19 variant was reported in the Jamnagar district on Saturday.
A 72-year-old man who returned from Zimbabwe tested positively for a new variant.
He was treated in a remote ward at G G.
Hospital three people from India came to Jamnagar from Zimbabwe to attend social functions on November 28.
The 72-year-old person had complaints of fever and cough and he was tested positive Covid on November 29.
The sample was sent to the National Pune Institute of Virology for the sequencing of the genome and the results came on Saturday.
Speaking with Toi, Vijay Kharadi, Commissioner of the City of Jamnagar said: “We have taken care of this person in a different dental college isolation ward with Covid Ward.
He was treated as an Omicron suspect since the first day.” According to district administration, two other people traveling with parents have been tested negatively.
Ten other family members included in the high-risk category are also negatively tested but are all stored in house isolation.
A team monitors their health regularly.
Omicron patients along with two other people landed at Ahmedabad airport and from there he came to Jamnagar by road.
Family members who went to Ahmedabad to accept it also in observations.
