Gurugram: The fact that city streets are very unsafe for motorists and pedestrians once again appearing forward.
About 78% of those who were killed in an accident on the road last year were two-wheeled riders and pedestrians.
Instead, the car driver is 11% of death.
According to data distributed by traffic police, around 409 people died in an accident on the road in 2021, while 574 others suffered injuries.
Fatality, 144 (35%) riding a motorcycle, 36 (9%) driving a scooter and 13 (3%) on a bicycle.
At 125, pedestrians were about 31% of the total road death last year.
The lack of paths, the crossing of zebra and the cycle lane and poor road engineering is the reason associated with pedestrian death and two-wheeled riders in Gurugram, experts said.
REN RAM, Associate Professor for Transportation Planning at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, said: “Most of the Gurugram road does not have a path.
Even the road with the path cannot be used because they have penetrated or have several obstacles.
This city is not Having a continuous, consistent, barrier and aesthetic path.
“City streets have been designed for vehicle movements without or a little focus on pedestrian movements, resulting in accidents, he said.
“Iffco Chowk is an example of one of the most unsafe intersections for pedestrians.
Some roads intersect at this intersection, but there are no provisions for pedestrian movements or cyclists.
Rajiv Chowk and many other major city intersections have similar problems,” Expert added .
Experts say several sectors have road service, but they have turned into illegal parking or have obstacles and deadlocks.
“The service road must be designed in such a way that people from the public or internal roads first come there and then to the main road.
At present, people immediately come to the main road from the community, which increases the chances of accidents,” Ram said.
In a large number of two-wheeled riders in the accident on the road, RAM said it was because of poor driving behavior or road engineering.
“Helmets will not prevent accidents, but they will reduce death,” he said, adding that it is very important for two-wheeled riders to follow traffic norms and avoid making changes to sudden or turning paths.
He said the road must be designed taking into account human behavior.
Instead of waiting for an accident on a road in a certain place to declare it, steps must be taken to prevent the creation of black spots in the first place.
“Instead of waiting for a long-term solution, direct and short-term steps are needed,” said RAM.
DCP (traffic) Ravinder Singh Tomar said the traffic police continued to make efforts to improve road safety and reduce road accidents.
“We analyze traffic data to identify accident-prone spots and make intervention to increase spots like that,” he said.
An official from the City Department and State Planning said for years, the focus has carried out construction of flyovers, underpasses and widening of existing roads to meet the increased volume of traffic.
“Focus only on vehicle movements, especially cars.
The movement of pedestrians and cyclists has been ignored,” said the official, adding that building infrastructure alone would not solve the problem.
