GURUGRAM: Police on Saturday busted yet another illegal call centre in the city.
It was running from a building in DLF Phase 3 where 16 men and four women were found working, they said.
According to the police, the call centre was cheating US citizens by posing as employees of the Social Security Administration.
The cops received a tip-off about the centre.
It was the third such bust in the city in a month.
At the centre, the cops found that the employees were talking to people over the phone in English and telling the victims that some illegal activity was detected on their social security numbers (SSNs).
The FIR quoted one of them saying, “Hi, this is Sarah Schuze calling from the department of Social Security Administration.
The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that there is a legal enforcement action filed on your social security number for fraudulent activities.
In order to connect to a federal agent, press ‘1’.
You will be connected to the department concerned.
If we don’t hear from you, your social security number will be blocked permanently.” Around 4,000-5,000 bulk voice messages were sent in a single day.
Once the victim pressed ‘1’, they would be connected to the call centre employees.
“These employees asked the victims to pay $100 to $800 through gift vouchers of brands such as Nike and Amazon,” said a copy of the FIR accessed by TOI.
These cards were then redeemed for cash.
The place was run by a man named Parth Keshu who originally hails from Daman and Diu.
According to the staff, he visited the centre once every ten days and was not present at the time of the bust.
“Keshu used to buy customer data from different websites and upload it on the server for the employees to access,” said a police official investigating the matter.
An FIR has been registered in the matter at the cybercrime branch.
Earlier this month, the police had busted two similar call centres in sectors 23 and 65.
