GURUGRAM: To make roads safer for commuters, GMDA will be shifting traffic lights to more appropriate spots at 12 different junctions of the city for better visibility.
The signals will now be installed as per the guidelines of the Indian Road Congress.
The project is expected to cost the metropolitan authority nearly Rs 25 lakh.
The decision to shift the traffic lights comes days after the GMDA changed the zebra crossings at multiple locations, making them safer for pedestrians.
The locations for this project include IFFCO Chowk metro station, Galleria Market, Bakhtawar Chowk, Faridabad Chowk, Ghata T-point CRPF camp, Ardee City, Bristol Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Jharsa Chowk and Pataudi Chowk.
“These zebra crossings were around 20-25 metres from the roadside whereas the IRC requires them to be at a distance of 4.5 metres from the roadside.
Since we have already changed the crossings, it has become necessary to shift the signals too,” said a GMDA official.
He said that the authority has already invited agencies for carrying out the work and once the bids are received, it will evaluate them and allot the contract.
“At some places, the traffic signals are hidden behind trees and poles, they will also be moved to prominent locations so that they can be seen by the commuters easily,” the official said.
Additionally, the metropolitan authority plans to put tabletop speed breakers at the identified junctions.
