Gurugram: The device can curb damage due to excavation

Gurugram: Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) may soon be able to extract for development work more safely and maintain the better underground utility.
Authority, officials said, are working on recruitment and, in the end, buying a torridable radar (GPR) machine that uses high frequency radio waves to find underground utility, both metal and non-metallic, such as gas pipes, optical fiber cables and cables electricity.
The method, officials said, would make it possible to determine the exact location of the utility and depth where they were, preventing damage to them during excavation.
“At present, the implementing agent or vendor does this task and sends a report to GMDA.
However, we do not have in-house equipment to validate information and ensure the extent to which it is true or wrong.
The GPR engine will help to audit the information they provide to us , “said a senior GMDA official.
GMDA, currently, gives permission rights (rows) to various telecommunications operators and electricity departments to put the fiber optic cable and high voltage pathways based on data obtained through GPR machines and delivered by various institutions.
Officials said GPR data around 400 km had been submitted to the authority so far.
However, there is no way to GMDA to validate data or map and maintain underground utility within road rights, creating scope for accidents during excavation.
“Every time the construction work is done, there is a possibility that the utility can be damaged during excavation.
It is very dangerous when utilities such as high pressure gas pipes are involved.
GPR machines will help protect against damage to these utilities by showing their right location, and therefore will help prevent incidents What is detrimental, “said the official.
The problem has emerged for discussion during the Core Planning Cell (BPK) meeting from GMDA earlier this month, where it has been proposed that the machine can be rented while the procurement process, after tender, is underway.
The proposal was approved by the CPC.
“Until now, we are looking for public feedback about the idea of procuring this machine.
After that, the tender will be carried out and only at that stage we will have clarity of costs and timelines regarding the procurement.
The problem is currently in process,” the official said.
