Guwahati: In a month, Guwahati will get a waste management plant built by more than 67 Bighas of Land in East Boragaon, on the outskirts of the city, to treat around 550 tons of waste produced per day.
The city, which has a population of more than 12 lakh and produces large amounts of waste per day, does not have a waste management plant.
The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has faced the challenge after the National Green Tribunal in 2019 commanded it to shift the land of Disposal West Boragaon, which pose a threat to fragile ecology from Beel Deus.
In June, TPA shifted to Chandrapur, where the authorities had to stop disposing of garbage after facing resistance from the local population.
Garbage is currently being dumped in East Boragaon.
Commissioner GMC Devasish Sharma said, “Three companies have qualified for the installation project of waste management factory in East Boragaon.
From them, one company will be given a project.
I spend more time monitoring the entire project to provide assistance to the population of the city.” He added that bio-methanization plant, which is installed in the chatribari area, is currently inactive.
“The operation of the bio-methane plant must be suspended because the amount of compost is reduced during the national locking last year.
It takes around 30 tons of compost to operate the factory.
We are thinking of continuing the factory operation again,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sharma said the Civic body also thought of installing incinerators to burn waste, which could not be treated.
“Some waste needs to be burned or discarded somewhere.
We are thinking of installing incinerators,” Sharma added.
A total of 70 NGOs were involved in a collection of waste from the door to the door and transported it to the location of the disposal.
