Lewis Hamilton has experienced racist abuse online after winning the English Grand Prix on Sunday, British media reported.
World Champion seven times celebrated the eighth win of the race after resoming back from a 10 second penalty for the first collision to send the title of Max Verstappen’s rival to the hospital.
Sky Sports reported Hamilton, 36, targeted hours online after victory, with racist messages including Monkey Emoji was sent in reply to posts by the Mercedes team on Instagram.
Instagram, owned by Facebook, does not immediately reply to Reuters requests for comments.
Hamilton has become a vocal advocate for social justice and among the supporters of the ‘black life material’ movement.
He said before the race he was inspired by the reaction of English football players for racist abuse after their penalty defeat to Italy in the European Championship final.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with a social media company last week to ask them to step against online harassment.
