Thiruvananthapuram: The police will include a surveillance system to monitor visitors to tribal hamlets in Vithura, in the rural areas of the district capital, where at least five female students are reported to have committed suicide in recent months.
After visiting their houses who committed suicide and other places in the hamlet to collect evidence, District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram Rural) Divya Gopinath said that the police would form a surveillance system to watch outsiders visiting this hamlet.
The girls were reported to commit suicide after falling in a trap of love where the drug mafia had great involvement.
The police team led by SP meets tribal tribes and tribal welfare department officials in the area to find out their complaints and take input from them.
The parents of those who committed suicide told police that the presence of a rampant drug mafia in the area.
The police will extend the probe in this direction and will also launch awareness campaign, SP said.
On Sunday, the excise official team led by the excise commissioner with R Gopakumar visited the colony in Peringammala and Idinjar.
The excise team has visited three houses from the suicide place reported.
“We have discussed with all stakeholders in the area and have decided to establish a team to provide awareness classes for tribal populations in these areas,” Gopakumar said.
The previous Excise Ministry has taken proactive steps where the cases of young people fell to drug addiction were reported.
