Bengaluru: The number of cases delayed in the Karnataka subordinate court almost doubled between January 2020 and December 2021 – mostly due to restrictions related to Covid and the obstacles seen last year – while almost 20.5% of judges remained empty in this court.
In January 2020, the cumulative pending cases in all lower trials in Karnataka were 10.5 lakh and jumped to 19.9 lakh on December 13, 2021 – increased 90%.
Of the current pending cases, 11.1 lakh is criminal and 8.7 lakh is a civil case, according to data from the national judicial data network.

Kerala saw a leap of 83.7%, Gujarat 73% and bihar 27.4%.
“Covid-19 is one of the main factors for increased dicty.
The court is closed for several weeks and other challenges such as collection of evidence (in virtual hearings), without cases that cannot move forward, it has impacted,” said Adifton Rozario.
Furthermore, nearly 21% post judge (5,193) was empty in India, compared to 20.5% in Karnataka.
It was almost 30% in Uttar Pradesh, 11.4% in Maharashtra, 13.8% in Kerala, 25.8% in Gujarat and 28% in Bihar.
