PANAJI: The Governor and Goa of Chancellor of Chancellor PS Sreedharan Pillai on Friday appointed Harilal B Menon as a village of Vissity.
Menon, who will be responsible soon, will be the first full-time academic from within the university to become VC.
Menon, who served as Dean of the School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric at GU, will have a period of five years.
More than 260 people have submitted a request for the position of Chancellor after Varun Sahni’s term ended last month.
Sahni also served as the reader at GU before being chosen as Chancellor’s representative, but Menon has served a full-time Goa University since joining the University in November 1988.
He was from the earliest batch to be recruited to the University of Goa, when Varsity still found his legs.
Born in 1962, the new VC has worked on many projects as sympathizers or joint educators, funded by agents such as ISRO.
In 1984, he received fellowship from CSIR.
The area of Menon specialization is the optical remote sensing of coastal and estuary waters, and aerosol science.
He has a doctorate from Cochin University of Science and Technology and does post-doc work at the Max-Plank Meteorology Institute and Oceanographic Institute.
He has many research publications for his name.
Menon is one of the most senior faculty members at GU.
After Sahni’s time ended, Chancellor had appointed the three member committee with the Director of CSIR General Shekhar Mande, former Director Ncert Jagmohan Singh Rajput and Drdo’s Satish Reddy as its members.
Of the 260 applicants, 23 were selected, and an interview was conducted with them on August 25.
Among applicants are some of the professors who serve the IITS, including old Iels Bombay and Kharagpur.
A former director of the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (Iiser) is also among many applicants.
Besides Menon, another Senior GU professor was also running for the post.
