New Delhi: Athletes from Haryana and Punjab once again lead the way for the country at the Olympics.
The two countries, with only 4.4% of the Indian population share, together sent 50 athletes to the Tokyo match, accounted for 40% of the Indian contingent.
Haryana has 31 athletes in the contingent, almost 25% of the total, while Punjab has 19.
Tamil Nadu comes next, after sending 11 athletes to Tokyo, 8.7% of the contingent.
Others in the top five are Kerala and up – each with 8 athletes.
Uttar Pradesh, which is almost 17% of the total Indian population, contributed 6.3% of the Tokyo Olympic contingent of the country, while Kerala with a population share of 2.6% has a representation of 6.3% in the Olympic squad.
For Haryana, nine of the 19 women’s hockey players, seven wrestlers (four women, three men), four boxers (three men, one woman) and four shooters (two women, two men) made the most of the numbers.
As for Punjab, 11 of the 19-member Hockey team of Indian members swelled Tally.
Two shooters (men and women), three of the athletics (two men, one woman), two members of the women’s hockey team, and one boxer made a total.
Tamil Nadu has five of the athletics, three of sailing, two table tennis players and one from the fence making numbers.
Kerala, known for his inheritance in athletics, has six tracks and field events from eight sent to Tokyo.
One is swimming and a men’s hockey team.
With a total of 127 athletes, India sent its biggest contingent with the Olympics and will take part in 18 disciplines: archery, athletics, boxing, badminton, riding, fence, golf, gymnastics, hockey, shooting, sailing, swimming, table tennis, tennis, lift iron and wrestling.
