Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Thursday prohibits Ganesh’s soaring made from Paris (POP) plaster in Hussainsagar.
However, the court allows immersion of clay idols free of chemicals with the warning they do on the ancient lake near PV Ghat, Sanjivaiiah Park and the Secretariat, but not in the main tank bund.
Experts welcomed moving and said it would be very helpful in reducing pollution from iconic lakes and also ensuring that the debris was not stacked in the main lake area.
Idol POP cannot be embedded in any lake, except HussainSagar, in the city and special ponds built by GHMC for this purpose must be used to immerse the idol, the court said in a direction.
From next year and so on, even the creation of pop idols will not be permitted, the court said.
“For this year, they will be allowed to be sold because officials fail to implement the norms of the central pollution control council in this regard and each of their forced prohibitions at the last minute will have a negative impact on the livelihoods of poor idol makers,” said A Bangku Acting Chairman Judge MS Ramachandra Rao and Justice T Vinod Kumar in the case of insult filed by Mamidi Advocates Venu Madhav who expressed serious concerns over the bad effects of pop idols and their immersion in Hussainsagar.
Madhav sought action against PCB, GHMC and police officers for failing to apply guidelines issued by the High Court in this matter.
The bench changed the insulting petition into a pill and after hearing all parties, to the conclusion that PCB, GHMC and the police did not want to take care for the environment in sensitive things, especially where the sentiments of the worshipers involved.
