MADURAI: Arunagirinatha Gnanasambantha Desika Paramacharya, Pontist to-292 Madurai Adheenam, one of the oldest Saivite Mutts, died at the age of 77 in a hospital in Madurai on Friday.
A former journalist in the DMK Organ ‘Murasoli’, Arunagirinathar continued to be 292 years in 1980.
The monastery, was said to have been founded nearly 1,300 years ago, revived by SAIVITE Saint ThiruNanShandar and is located very close to the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple.

Although a religious leader, Arunagirinathar openly gave his views on politics and was a supporter of former Main Minister J Jayalalithaa.
He was accepted at Apollo Special Hospital on August 9 after a lung-related disease and wore a ventilator, but he died on Friday night.
Mutt’s residents sealed the room at the end of the pontiff on Thursday when his condition became serious.
The substitute for Adheenam is always controversial, with the final pontist itself chooses two of them and then returns to his decision.
In August 2012, Mutt suffered controversy when Godman Nithyananda risked the claims to become a pontist of the 293rd round but had been excluded from this post in October.
Extending condolences, Minister M K Stalin’s head described Adheenam’s death as a big loss for the spiritual people.
